They're going to "talk" but only if Iran does what they want. Yeah right. Sorry won't wash, isn't meant to wash either. This is a run amok superpower waving a large stick and a figleaf.

I hope your optimism is called for. I tend to think that it is a way of appearing more diplomatic while keeping the inflexible demand of stopping all uranium enrichment in place. I remember how depressed I felt back in late 1990 as the US (with UN allies) kept making the "diplomatic" demands on Iraq's withdrawal from Kuwait more and more stringent that war became "inevitable." And of course I recall in early 2003 how the US/UK kept promising that they wanted diplomacy while rebuffing or ignoring any attempts by Iraq to meet demands.

My guess is that there is a strong core within the Bush camp that is gunning for attacks on Iran and will push as hard as they can for a military outcome.

Hope I'm wrong.

I'd like to think that the Bush Administration took a look at the horrific spike in violence in Afghanistan and the continuing stream of violence in Iraq and went, "Oh, forget it. We can't pull this military thing off with Iran," and are opting for talks instead. That's probably not true, but I'd still like to hope for it.

Yes, ms Rice offered to talk, but only after Iran would accept the American position and change its policy accordingly. Its like offering to talk about peace, if only the other side first surrenders. It is, so to speak, 'an offer they must refuse', an offer meant to show how peaceful the Americans are, and how warlike the Iranians. Bombing becomes more acceptable after such an exercise.

06/02/06 -- --Former CIA analyst and Presidential advisor Ray McGovern, fresh from his heated public confrontation with Donald Rumsfeld, fears that staged terror attacks across Europe and the US are probable in order to justify the Bush administration's plan to launch a military strike against Iran, which he thinks will take place in June or July.

What is the hidden Date? YOU GUESSED IT! 6/6/06!
